Life in Review: “Mozart’s Last Aria” by Matt Rees

Mozart’s Last Aria by Matt Rees is a compelling historical mystery that blends history with fiction to create a fantastic story of mystery, intrigue and suspense.
Nannerl is the famous Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s sister. They have been estranged for the last few years when she learns of her brother’s tragic death. She travels to Vienna to visit her sister-in-law and pay her respects, and to find out more about the letter Constanze Mozart sent to her. She finds out that Mozart was convinced that he had been poisoned and that he had predicted his death. After witnessing many mysterious things, she begins to suspect that perhaps her brother wasn’t just ill and delusional, but perhaps his death really had been intentional. She finds herself in the middle of a mystery that has also put her in danger.
I very highly recommend this book! The writing is absolutely beautiful and the story will hook you from the very start. I really love a story like this one that has some real history blended with fiction. I took piano lessons for many years while I was growing up, and during that time I developed a fascination for the great composers. Since the moment I read about this book, I was really anxious to read it, and I was definitely not disappointed. It’s full of historical fact, mystery, intrigue and suspense. I love the era and the author took me away to another time and place, making me feel as if I were there. This is the first book that I have read by this author, but I am an instant fan. I will definitely be looking for more of his work.
Book Summary:
The news arrives in a letter to his sister, Nannerl, in December 1791. But the message carries more than word of Nannerl’s brother’s demise. Two months earlier, Mozart confided to his wife that his life was rapidly drawing to a close . . . and that he knew he had been poisoned.
In Vienna to pay her final respects, Nannerl soon finds herself ensnared in a web of suspicion and intrigue—as the actions of jealous lovers, sinister creditors, rival composers, and Mozart’s Masonic brothers suggest that dark secrets hastened the genius to his grave. As Nannerl digs deeper into the mystery surrounding her brother’s passing, Mozart’s black fate threatens to overtake her as well.
Transporting readers to the salons and concert halls of eighteenth-century Austria, Mozart’s Last Aria is a magnificent historical mystery that pulls back the curtain on a world of soaring music, burning passion, and powerful secrets.

Wow! this is one book I am going to keep an eye on.
I’m really coming to like books that combine historical characters into a fictional story – I’ll have to try this one out!
Thanks for being on the tour.
